Book of Emma pg 5, and a rough

struggling with poor daylight one more, but photographed rather than scanned again, these images kind of hint at the direction forward both 'the book of emma' and the 'ode' series seem to be headed in - though in no way is this small study featuring not one but TWO bird masks indicative of the currently in process 'ode #3' which is proving easier asnd less troublesome than its predecessor, which i'm still feeling conflicted about. . .

anyway. in regards to this sketchbook page, it started out as the central image and sort of morphed into a makeshift comic book page, minus dialogue of which there'd be a single line in the bottom panel (see detail), 'iain, are you awake?'

so again, we're dealing with a certain amount of autobiography. . .

lots of shading on this page, so it's hard to capture in any subtlety, but i'm happy with this, and it's something that i want to take a bit further. . . .

  1. I love her expression in the first one. I also really like the idea of this "Book of Emma" becoming a kind of keepsake or journal for you - how fun will that be? To look back at it over time?

The study is also great, even if you say the final product has changed - it's very atmospheric, with the shapes in the background. Makes me think of a drizzly city skyline.

  2. I love these!

Can I say that I really like your more stylised pictures? I like all your work but I *really* like the looser almost cartoony stuff. :)

The storyline from this "Comic" looks familiar! ;)

  4. bron, i'm loving this sketchbook. the funny thing about it is that i never know what i'm going to do in it next - though the idea of some form of comic book seems kind of appealing at the moment i don't want that to take over what is at the moment a very loose, unplanned collection of drawings, so. . .. maybe i'll start a second sketchbook :P

the study and the concept picture for 'ode #2' were both done on random bits of cardboard which i think are creating some nice textures with the washes of ink and / or acrylic i'm doing as a base. . .

emm: i like the stylised stuff too, it's definitely more fun to do, but i think i'm far too much of a perfectionist to just STICK to doing that as opposed to the more 'realistic' stuff. . . and yes, canary mask :)
