Emma That Was.

Righto,

This one's a bit different and is one of the oil pieces I've been working on. It depicts - as the title suggests - Emma, circa 2002 when I first met her - long, thick hair, nose stud, eyeliner and a little rounder in the face.

I've given her the same blue cardigan and turquoise shirt because I think they look great with the slightly stylised fleshtones i tend to use, and the brushwork in this is a bit more my usual fare rather than very smooth like in 'Emma #3'

Is it finished? Probably not. Am I done with it for now? Yes. I really liek it in this state, to be honest. Sometimes I have this awful habit of overworking things - I get to a point where a painting looks great, and I keep on going with it and absolutely ruin it and there is definitely a point where you should say 'this looks good' and put your brushes down. . .

This looks good.

  1. Oh I love this. I think the hair could do with a bit more definition, but the face is just perfect and very expressive. The eyes are beautiful.

  2. It's finished. This is a beautiful painting. I love the way you do flesh tones with little hash marks and brush strokes. I really like her expression too - also the recurring theme of the blue cardigan and turquoise shirt. Funny how certain things like clothes, unusual accessories, the bag someone is always carrying, etc., can become so iconic and representative of that person.

  3. I meant to comment on this before now, but you already know that I love it.

You seem to have some kind of inate ability to see me in a way nobody else does or can, and I love you for it.

You enjoyed doing this more than the others, didn't you?

  4. I've been meaning to comment on your blog for a while now, just never remembered my password at the same time as i was browsing in here :P I think I have a thousand different very clever passwords by now.
First thing, the paintings.. o my god, they kick ass. I thought you were too old to improve ;) (don't growl, i only joke)

Second, Emma is perfect. For you, I'm pretty sure, but for your art, it's like you've always drawn her. :)

I'm reading and looking, and smiling when I do. I'm really happy for you. Keep this up :)
