Black and White, #3 & #4

. . . two further black and white pieces, one - the second here - more stylised, while one is a bit more realistic than the other three have been and maybe isn't technically black and white because i used some buff titanium acrylic which is just an essentially colour for anyone who paints people.

buff titanium. the absolute best base for fleshtones there is.

admittedly here it's used to make things a bit more subtle, and thus i'm maybe going to rework the 'ode' paintings i've done thus far including #3 to incorporate it - i like the way it works with the black and white, it adds. . . . SOMETHING.

anyway, i think this much more realistic little painting - again, about A4-ish and done on a scrap of cardboard and left rough in areas while worked tightly in others - is one of the best things i've done recently, it has some lovely quality. it's simple and uncomplicated. simple and uncomplicated is good. . .

  1. Why didn't you say you'd posted new paintings? You nutter!

These are good. Did you enjoy doing these more than the big ones?

I don't think you should go "reworking" your other paintings though because you might fuck them up. "Ode #3" sure but leave the other two.

  2. Sorry I haven't been around to comment - rough week at work. Buff titanium! Haha, that's what I use when I paint in "black and white" (like this old example - http://tinyurl.com/nqd8tp - though admittedly there's some gold in there too), so it gets my vote. I love them both but absolutely lovelove the first one. Her expression and the quality of the painting are beautiful.

  3. aha, bronwen! i might have known you'd be familiar with the magic thing that IS buff titanium but i didn't know you'd used it on those old black and white pieces.

which of course just reminds me that it's been rather a while since i saw anything new from YOU. . .

    hint, hint. ;)

  4. Hint, hint. Yes, yes. Now that you mention it, I'm sort of working on something. I'm just trying to get back in the swing of things. I have all kinds of excuses, like the fact that the room that would be my studio (until we move again in August) is carpeted in thick, absorbent, pure white carpet. White carpet + black ink + Bronwen = surely the worst idea ever??? Regardless, I'm trying to be a good, responsible, motivated artist. I'll keep you posted. :-)
