'Ode', #1
sort of the beginnings of a completely unplanned series, but sometimes you start something and you can see avenues and directions it could go in beyond a single image. . .
black and white - and a little blue - acrylic on canvas, 24" x 24", detailed in areas and left intentionally unfinished and sketchy in others which used to be kind of my schtick.
a few other noteable iain-esque inclusions which should speak for themselves. . .
some details:

Oh wow, Iain! This looks so good now - You've changed it so much since I last saw it!!!
ReplyDeleteI really love it. I love seeing myself through you, through your eyes.
You're so talented I wish you'd start believing that!
Are *you* happy with it?
<3
it's changed pretty drastically hasn't it? the photos don't really do a lot of the tones justice, photographs of paintinsg rarely do. . .
ReplyDeletefor teh most part this one was pretty effortless and it was liberating getting back to painting in black and white which is something i always loved doing. like the others i've done, i got conflicted about the hair which initially wasn't very detailed, but then got too detailed and threw everything off which i tackled by 'tying it back' as it were, letting one ear out and tucking hair behind that ear, so it was easier to simply paint the layers as quite defined and suggesting form rather than doing everything with a lot of lights and darks and individual detailing. . .
i like it. there are a couple of things i want to tighten up and alter a bit, but they're small details, otherwise it's finished and done with and i can focus on other things. . .
wow, spectacular work. i can tell this one is special to you. it's a testament to your ability to paint strong, emotional, uniquely personal images in black and white. i think it's beautifully done - you should be proud.
ReplyDeleteThis is so pretty and you've really captured Emma. The hair! Really loving the mask too!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see more of your work :)
bron: i do like this. it sort of painted itself in a way and went from a basic idea (the poses) to being sketched out on the canvas almost effortlessly. which is kind of how painting SHOULD be. . .
ReplyDeleteyou know, back in ye olde DA days i think it was the black and white stuff people liked most and which garnered most response from people, which is funny because it was the stuff i enjoyed doing MOST for a lot of years but i fell out of the way of it. . . but i'm loving it again, and the large scale seems to really suit me. these figures are essentially life-sized, so. . .
but yeah, this is definitely expressive, to say the least. . . :)
gem: thank you. the hair was a problem for a bit, i started with emma's hair DOWN and it wasn't looking right so i tucked it back and bingo - problem solved :)
you won't have to wait long to see more stuff. . .
Definitely more like it now, honey. :)
ReplyDeleteIt's just a little thing but I really like seeing her one ear poking out like that :)
ReplyDeletegem: i swear i spent more time fixing and changing the hair than any other part of this, it was the biggest problem area in an oterhwise fairly straightforward piece. . .
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see "Ode #2" finished. I like it even more and you got me to a tee. :)
